Nthatisi o a ithatisa, says Mangaung 7

Bloemfontein – The acting Executive Mayor of Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Greg Nthatisi is accused of favoritism and factionalism by the recently expelled ANC councilors, Mangaung 7.

This follows Nthatisi’s decision to appoint 10 Mayor Committee Members ( MMCs) on Friday, 8 August 2023. Nthatisi made these changes to his team:

MMC Finance – Cllr. Logan Kruger
MMC Technical Services – Cllr. Vusi Soqaga
MMC Corporate Services – Cllr. Manthuse Letawana
MMC Community Services – Cllr. Alfred Qai
MMC Public Safety and Transport – Cllr. Lulama Titi-Odili
MMC Performance Management, Monitoring, and Compliance – Cllr. Sibongile Tsoleli
MMC Waste and Fleet – Cllr. Theodorah Mosala
MMC Human Settlement – Cllr. Ntombi Nhlapo
MMC Planning and Economic Development – Cllr. Nthabiseng Jonas
MMC Agriculture and Rural Development – Cllr. Pani Twala

In response to this Mangaung 7 released a statement lambasting both Nthatisi and the ruling party.

“The interim Executive Mayor has appointed 10 MMCs as opposed to the 9 that the law allows him to do. He has done this and was brave enough to make it public and a way of saying to the community of Mangaung, I will use your money and resources as I please. At least more than 72 hours has passed since he announced his unlawful action last Friday, the 18th August 2023 and no one has called him to order, including the ANC, the Provincial government in the name of the MECs for COGTA and Finance and the current national intervention team and NCR who are full time in Mangaung.

The Municipal Structures Act is very clear on what must happen with the appointment of the MMCs. A simple reading should have told the interim executive mayor that he can only appoint a maximum of 9 and not 10 MMCs. We all know that MMM has a position of the deputy executive mayor, which cannot be appointed by the executive mayor but must be elected by council.”
Nthatisi started his tenure on a high with a cleaning campaign that suddenly collapsed as expected because it was never sustainable in the first place and it also raised questions on whether this was a publicity stunt or myopic and shortsighted power that be.”

In other news, there are brewing tensions in Mangaung as plans to disband the recently elected Regional Executive Committee.
