Bloemfontein – The 2023 edition of the Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe) is canceled and will be replaced, Step UP News has established.
This follows the recent special EXCO gathering held on which as reported focused on Macufe and the proposed matches to be played in Mangaung by Moroka Swallows and relegated Marumo Gallants.
We can confirm that there will not be any Macufe this year despite Maki Mahasa, MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation undertakings during her budget vote and repeated during the social impact initiative which was held on 12 July 2023.
Themed “the legacy lives on through you”, the irony is in the history of Macufe this will be the first time Macufe is not happening except for the covid-19 period. This is happening under the leadership of Mxolisi Dukwana, Free State Premier.
According to sources with intimate knowledge, the reason that will be given as to why there is no Macufe is the ongoing case between DS Consortium and SACR will be used as an excuse for government failures.
Macufe is not the only project that SARC has handled poorly of late the June 16 commemoration with service providers announced on the eve of the event and the Freedom Day celebrations which embarrassed Dukwana as we previously reported.
The Freedom Day celebration or lack thereof, forced the provincial government to have a communication workshop which was a waste of time because what changed?
With Macufe gone until next year, hello Lemo Festival, the launch was graced by Acting Executive Mayor, Greg Nthatisi and Sello Dithebe, spokesperson for Premier Dukwana.
With the Macufe budget hanging there is an opportunity for Private Public Partnership.
This, they will have to do it carefully otherwise it will be flagged and Auditor General will investigate it and declare it irregular but sadly, another court case.

Free state is a joke province,,,no jobs no service delivery only crooks who are busy using the money for themselves,,,,as for that lemo mall festival or whatever it is, ,,,it’s a joke to the people of bloemfontein who are not working and then there’s a stupid festival planned ,,,the road that side is repaired,,,,free state has no government they don’t care about their citizens,,period
