Bloemfontein – The illegal activities committed by Basotho living in South Africa and South Africans living in Lesotho continue to negatively impact relations between these neighboring countries.
Last year South Africans in Mangaung targeted Basotho hawkers following the murder of a South African businessman allegedly by two Basotho nationals while in Soweto, Basotho are suspected of being involved in the two separate target shootings.
In the last 6 months alone, around 31 Basotho nationals were killed in Welkom by gas while illegally mining.
This triggered Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Minerals and Energy to say Basotho nationals in South Africa are committing economic sabotage.
The comment from Mantashe was not well received with Machesetsa Mofomobe, leader of the Basotho National Party and Member of Parliament saying drug lords, fuel thieves, and cable theft are committing economic sabotage in South Africa and nothing is said let alone done.
