Bloemfontein – The silence over the 2023 edition of Mangaung African Cultural Festival (MACUFE) is so loud it’s deafening, the cultural event which dates back to 1997 saw the 2022 edition dragged to court, and to date, the case is still before the courts.
While the Supreme Court of Appeal has referred the case back to high court the advert for this year is not yet out with roughly 49 days left, another mess is likely to happen this year.
The briefing session was interrupted by residents who demanded a local service provider be appointed.
Then a court marathon was launched by DS Consortium after the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation appointed Consumer Connectedness (C-2).
Court ruled in favor of DS Consortium and both department and C-2 appealed, lost, and lost again until they sought SCA which referred the matter to the high court.
It remains to be seen if sanity will prevail at least by the powers that or maybe do it for electioneering purposes.
The creative sector tax payers have joined the silence.
