Pretoria – The 47th edition of the infamous June 16 and the commemoration thereof is a spit in the face of the youth.
Statistics show that in 2021, 7,4 million South African youth were unemployed, representing 59,3% of the total unemployed. Youth aged between 25 and 34 years made up 65,5% of the unemployed youth and 38,9% of the total unemployed.
Young people aged 15-24 years accounted for 34,5% of total youth unemployment and 20,5% of total unemployed.

The largest share of unemployed youth was amongst the Black African population group (60,0%), followed by Coloured (58,4%). The Indian/Asian and White population groups recorded shares of unemployed youth of 55,5% and 41,1% respectively.
The few jobs available are shared with foreign nationals.
With high unemployment, crime becomes the next option to get the next meal and the final destination is either death or prison.
In South African prisons, there are at least 42 000 inmates under 35 years and there are 8066 foreign nations already sentenced while 4096 remand detainees.
Our government would rather spend money on inmates than opportunities for youth.
Drugs continue to cause havoc while murders and rape are skyrocketed.
Sending drug addicts to prison is the most useless thing ever, prisons are not rehab centre.
