Border Staff to down tools in protest

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – The transfer of staff from a multiagency into an integrated Border Management Authority (BMA) has angered staff over the transfer as they allege they were not consulted and lack of communication from the new law enforcement body.

The transferred staff provided immigration services at border posts and were until 1 April 2023 with the below departments;
– Home Affairs,
– Foresty, Fisheries, and Environment,
– Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development,
– Health.

In a video shared with this publication, Dr Michael Masiapato, the commissioner of BMA gives an overview of what’s to come and this was just before the integration.

WATCH:

Hardly, fifteen days later there were issues with April salaries but the authority was quick to sort out any teething.

Step UP News has learned how frustrated staff at the border posts are planning to down tools over unpaid policies since they have been transferred to the integrated platform and the target is Maseru Border Post.

A list of at least 17 discrepancies at the Beitbridge Border includes:

  • the gender of some of the officials was found male while female on payslips,
  • Their date of birth and identity numbers are wrong,
  • their tax numbers are wrong,
salaries are not paid on time,
  • salaries decreased,
  • insurances policies are deducted from payslips but the money is not transferred to the relevant insurance companies

We also discovered that the same things are reported in the Maputswe and other border posts as per WhatsApp texts sent to staff members.

“Dear clients, your police xxxxxxxx is in areas. Arrears may affect your benefits or end your policy.”

Another text.

“Going forward, premiums for policy xxxx will be deducted from your bank account and not your salary.”

A letter dated 23 May 2023, from Kobus Reyneke, Director for Contribution Management Section at Government Pensions Administration Agency to BMA’s Dr Masiapato confirms the enrollment of BMA staff into GEPF.

It is not clear when the officials will down tools but this will surely affect the already porous borders.

Dr Masiapato, BMA CEO and PSA representatives could not be reached for comments.

In other news the ANC in Mangaung will today be in court in the contempt matter involving expelled councillors and Maryke Davis, Mangaung Metro speaker.

The ruling party in the region has also decided that it will issue load shedding schedule, wonders never end.

This is a developing story.
