Freedom Day: Dukwana rejected, again

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – When the late Anglican Church Arch-bishop Desmond Tutu warned the African National Congress in 2011 due to what we know as the arrogance of numbers, little did he know let alone envisage his prophecy will come to light just 12 years later.

Following the dismal performance of the ANC in the by-elections garnering just 36% in Paul Roux, Dihlabeng, many are people predicting the end for the ANC in Free State is with Julius Malema, EFF leader saying the current Premier and chairperson of the ANC in the province, Mxolisi Dukwana is not known by residents.

The ANC failed to retain Ward 17 despite having access to state resources and hardly a week later, the annual Freedom Day celebration held in Sasolburg was a total flop showing that the Premier and his party are rejected, again.

Themed consolidating and safeguarding our democratic gains, the annual celebration posters had both Premier and MEC for SACR as keynote speakers but sources say Premier made a U-turn at the gate of the multipurpose centre saving himself from further embarrassment. The event was attended by kids as young as 13 years old.

Last year Dukwana was booed off stage at Dr. Molemela Stadium while trying to address ANC members and this shows the wheels are indeed coming off.

In exactly a month, 3rd June 2023, it will be 100 days in office for Dukwana and as committted, we will trace what he has done and achieved from his promises when he took office.

Other sources say the Premier has now demanded a full report as to why the event was not attended.

At this stage, it’s unclear how much was spent on this flop and which company was awarded the job.

In other news, leaked documents show a submission dated 15 March 2023 requesting donations for community media in the province, according to the submission the money is for general use. It’s not clear what criterion is used but what is shocking is the same document had been scratched out by pen, it’s not clear who scratched out the R1 million.

Free State SACR is not new to this, it is alleged that for the unveiling of the Fezile Dabi statute, the department was billed R1m and refusal by Kutloano Tlhakudi, the former acting HoD to sign it off got her replaced by erstwhile Premier, Sefora Ntombela.

As if the Macufe saga was not enough, the security company providing services in the same department is alleged to be on a month-to-month contract since 2018.

How can this department run well when the HoD is acting, CFO is acting, and SCM Director acting?
