MEC Mathae to launch Easter Road Campaign few kilos shy of potholed R26

Staff reporter

Bloemfontein – The newly appointed MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae will this afternoon launch the provincial Easter road safety campaign ahead of the long weekend.

The launch will be held at the N8 Ladybrand intersection towards the Maseru border gate at 14h00.

While not much is known at this stage sources at the department say preparations started last week in Winburg when she met traffic officials and from what they have gathered the launch will be about police visibility mainly.

Just a few kilometers from where the launch will take place is the notorious potholed R26 which stretches to Reitz. If this road is not embarrassing the Free State Provincial Government nothing will, it makes driving worse and it is an economic road that connects Free State and Lesotho.

Step UP SA News has learned most drivers use the Buthabothe border, drive in Lesotho, and exit via Maputswe just to avoid the horrible R26 road.

Other motorists use Marquad Road which is also full of potholes.

In 2021 farmers blocked the Ficksburg intersection using cars and tractors while protesting against bad roads, the situation has gotten worse and if you drive on R26 you are guaranteed at least to find two cars stuck with either tyres or rims damaged by potholes.

CarteBlanche exposed the death-trapped roads but all is forgotten.

The least said about potholes in Ladybrand, Thaba Nchu, Botshabelo and Bloemfontein the better.
