LESOTHO: Major opposition party heads to elections while RFP faces revolt internally

Staff reporter

Lesotho’s major opposition party, Democratic Congress (DC) is heading to National Executive Committee (NEC) elections next Friday in Matsieng on the outskirts of the capital Maseru.

This three-day elective conference will start on Friday night and wrap up on Sunday.

DC spokesperson Serialong Qoo said his party is ready to hold the elections and all is in order now to see elections taking place on the said dates.

“The mood is high but cool,” he said, adding that those entering the race are busy contesting for their positions.

He said they have not heard of any conflicts and issues that could frustrate the elections.

Qoo said all the positions building up the party’s NEC would be contested except the deputy leader portfolio.

He said the party’s current deputy leader Motlalentoa Letsosa is still vying for that position again.

And no candidate is competing with him for that position.

“Letsosa is uncontested for that position,” Qoo said.

DC holds committee elections after every three years except for the position of the leader which is done after every five years.

Letsosa who is the former Member of Parliament for the Qalabane constituency and former Minister of Home Affairs lost last year’s elections to the new party, Revolution For Prosperity (RFP).

Members of the DC said they want Letsosa back in that position because he has done quite a good job while he was the Minister of Home Affairs to fight human trafficking which is a grave concern in the country.

Apart from that, he works hard to unite the party and see it growing from one level to the next.

The members of the party consider him one of the major architects of the party.

The conference will determine who will be leading the DC’s national executive committee leading up to the country’s general election in 2027.

In the October 7 elections, DC got only 29 seats in the parliament. The party dealt a heavy blow from the RFP which swept almost all the constituencies.

It got 11 Proposed Proportional (PR) seats and won 18 constituencies making a total of 29.

The party appears to be reeling from shock after it was spanked out of power by the RFP during last month’s general election.

It said it suspects the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) tinkered with the ballot papers ahead of the October 7 general election in which it performed dismally.

Letsosa said he does not know why his party members have trust in him.

“They are the ones to answer,” he said, adding that it might be because he protects his leader all the time.

Letsosa said when there are party issues; they normally sit down with his colleagues in the committee and solve them.

He said no party is free of differences but for the DC, they solve them peacefully.

In other news, the newly formed Revolution For Prosperity(RFP) led by Sam Matekane is facing red volt from its members.

Having won the October 7 elections, members are now demanding elective conference for the NEC.
