Health Minister applauds Free State Department of Health on HIV control measures

With covid-19 a thing of the past the focus is now on HIV/AIDS and the commemoration post the covid-19 was held at Dr. Rantlai Molemela stadium in Rocklands, Bloemfontein.

The day started with David Mabuza, Deputy President and chairperson of the South African National AIDS Council pulling out despite a program sent earlier in the week.

According to the program, Mabuza was supposed to deliver keynote address however his spokesperson said he won’t make it as he has to be in parliament.

“The Deputy President will be tending his responsibilities as a leader of government business in parliament,” a statement from Matshepo Seedat

The keynote address was then given by the Health Minister Mr. Joe Phaahla, Minister of Health, who started by breaking numbers down.

“As of 2021, 85% of people living with HIV knew their status, 88% of those were getting treatment, and 92% of those who were getting treatment had their virus under control.”

Zooming into Free State Phaahla said.

“The Free State Province has done exceptionally well in terms of testing, having already surpassed the 94% threshold.

The overall population served by the public and private sectors in the province is now 94% of people who are living with HIV know their status; 86% of those who know their status on antiretroviral treatment; 92% of those who are on treatment are virally suppressed.”

Mapelele Mosoahle reflected on Free State Health’s work.

“Today we are here to commemorate World Aids day, the purpose of this event is to remember our success in dealing with HIV/AIDS. As long as you live a positive lifestyle you are good.”

Red Cross’ Claudia Mangwegape’s message was purely to urge those who are negative to stay negative.

Well done to MEC Tsiu, and her team.
