CENTLEC celebrates fallen heroes

Centlec SOC held a memorial walk and prayer on Friday, 1 April 2022 in celebration and remembrance of men and women who keep the lights burning for the community of the Mangaung Metropolitan and within the centlec area of supply including Mohokare and Kopanong Municipality both in the Xhariep District.

54 fallen heroes and 19 pensioners including current centlec employees were honored and recognized in terms of their contribution to service delivery.

Furthermore, Centlec had in the financial year under review, faced daunting challenges and risks that threatened and harmed CENTLEC’s ability to deliver services sustainably.

CENTLEC (SOC) Ltd suffered financial loss due to the ongoing theft of copper cables at electrical distribution centers and sub-stations. The Entity had encountered numerous incidents of tampering, vandalism of streetlights, bypassing of electricity meters, and illegal connections of electricity.

The impact of vandalism of electrical infrastructure, and illegal connections led to a decline in revenue, increased power outages, and posed a threat to human lives and animals.

• Two employees are in the age group (19-23)

• Two hundred and twenty employees are in the age group (24 -39)

• Two hundred and seventy-three employees are in the age group (40-49)

• One hundred and sixty-two employees are in the age group (50-59)

• Forty employees are in the age group (60-65)

Malefane Sekoboto, Centec SOC CEO said they have partnered with the Central University of Technology to ensure that there is employee development.

“In terms of employee development, we have a partnership with CUT and they will take 41 employees within three years to do HIGHER CERTIFICATE IN RENEWABLE ENERGY.
We have also resuscitated our strategic partnership with the Black Management Forum.”

With regards to fallen employees, past and present Sekoboto said.

“We salute all of them for making sure that the entity is still giving the community the basic service of providing electricity despite the challenges that Centlec encounter from time to time.”

In conclusion, Sekobokoto said they are finalizing the business case for funding.

“The maintenance and refurbishment backlog per year amounts to R351million. The management is finalizing the business case proposal to source additional funding to address the infrastructure backlog.”

Last month Centlec switched off lights in 5 government buildings and recovered over R90 million following intervention by Kopung Ralikontsane, Director General at Free State Provincial Government.
