ANC FS dumps Harrismith in Phumelela instead of fixing Maluti-A-Phofung

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State has proposed some drastic changes to the Demarcation Board regarding some key municipalities in the province.

The changes outlined in the leaked proposal which is drafted by the current MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development, Thembeni Nxangisa is sectioned into two categories: the splitting of municipalities; and the establishment of new municipalities.

The following municipalities will remain as they are:

Letsemeng Local Municipality
Dihlabeng Local Municiaplity
Nketoana Local Municiaplity and
Mafube Local Municipality

With respect to the changes, the MEC has suggested the removal of the backbone of Maluti-a-Phofung, Harrismith from the troubled municipality and incorporate it into the Phumelela Local Municipality in Vrede.

Harrismth contributes so much into that waterless municipality due to N3.

The MEC further proposes the establishment of a new district municipality which will include Dewetsdorp, Wepener, Van Stadensrus, and Zastron.

Another surprise proposal is the disestablishment of Masilonyana Local Municipality. The Southpan, and Brandfort areas will slot into the already burdened & dirty Mangaung Metro.

Reasons given to advance these changes are mainly service delivery related.

Does this mean the ANC is conceding it’s failing to provide services?

Unfortunately establishing new municipalities and reconfiguring others will not change fortunes as long as those tasked with serving the communities are still there. It’s like divorcing your wife for cheating only to be involved with another woman who was dumped for cheating.

The ANC should be focusing on its deployees who are busy doing nothing not this nonsense of dermacations.

People want jobs, health care, food security, services which include collection of rubbish, clean water, roads and clean government.

Is that too hard to do with all these with millions meant for services at their disposal?

Fuel keeps going up and the only thing you want to do is move municipalities.

Oupa Khoabane, spokesperson for Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) did not respond to our questions.
