While South Africans are celebrating Human Rights Day, today, residents of Mangaung do not have access to water, a basic human right, and are inhaling bad air from uncollected rubbish in the Central Business Development.
While we applaud Mxolisi Siyonzana, the newly elected Mangaung Metro Executive Mayor for his embarking on disconnecting water to companies that owe the municipality money, water is a basic need that is accommodated in the constitution.
The lack of water and sanitation is a public health crisis, and it deprives people of their right to live in dignity.
Without water you can’t cook, you can’t bath, you can’t clean anything but most sadly, you dehydrate.
On the 10th March 2022, Siyonzana and other officials embarked on project disconnection and his massage was very unequivocal.
WATCH:
Residents in Mangaung have not had water over the past few days due to apparently “maintenance work” by Bloem Water and despite communication and assurance from the Metro that water supply would be restored late on Saturday.
Step UP SA News went around the Central Business District and found the city to be filthy with rubbish all over including Hoffman Square.

The next stop was Charlotte Maxeke street, and the passage leading to Middestad was filled with uncollected rubbish.

Corner West Burger and Charlotte Maxeke street right in front of the library have turned into another illegal dumping zone that is smelly.
The most embarrassing dirt is just 50 meters from Metro Office with rubbish splashed inside the water ponds and surely the Mayor, the council, and the entire EXCO pass there every week but is there a political will to get Mangaung to function like other Metros?

Mangaung Metropolitan residents deserve better.
