During his question and answer session African National Congres (ANC) and business people in Free State on Saturday, 19th February 2022, former president Thabo Mbeki applauded the Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) for the planned lekgotla which amongst others was aimed at addressing service delivery issues in the province. Step UP SA News can now confirm that the lekgotla was in fact poorly attended owing to factional battles within the party.
According to sources the lekgotla was poorly communicated and many senior leaders in the African National Congress (ANC) did not attend.
A source with intimate knowledge says during the former president’s sessions the expectation was that all 43 IPC members would attend but that was not the case.
“Unfortunately we can’t mention names but less than 20 IPC members attended the session with Mbeki which should not be taken at face value.”
Another source says the power dynamics are making it difficult for renewal to be forged ahead.
That said, Step UP SA News has reliably learned even the visit by deputy president David Mabuza was also poorly supported by IPC members.
It’s clear that renewal project in Free State shall end where Freedom Charter and Better Life For All ended, lip service.
The IPC was formed after the NEC tasked former president Kgalema Motlanthe to establish a team of all parties to run affairs in Free State, but in government the other faction is not represented.
The call by the NEC followed the Supreme Court of Appeal judgement that set aside the ANC Free State Elective Conference making all decisions of that conference invalid and it was not the first nor the second time but the third time that an Provincial Elective Conference was nullified via the courts.
March 31 will mark exactly a year since the scathing judgement was handed but what has the IPC achieved in 12 months?
With how things are currently going it’s very likely that the provincial conference will also end up decided by the court.
