Cutting Edge News, Real Stories From South Africa

MANGAUNG METRO REFUSE TO PAY FOR MEDICAL BILLS FOR STAFF IN AN ACCIDENT

The Mangaung Metro is known to be amongst the corrupt municipalities in South Africa, just as the employees of institution deal with unfair appointments, they also have to deal with those that are treated as eggs within.

Last month the National Treasury ordered the disbandment of the newly established Mangaung Metro Police Services, referencing the municipality’s precarious financial and service-delivery performance.

Writing to city manager Sello More and others, Malijeng Mgqaleni said the directive was not negotiable.
“This letter serves to again employ you as the accounting officer of the metro to supply National Treasury with all memorandums and reports that served at the council which were the basis for the decision to establish the metro police. It is also critical that the said documents include the decision-making process of how the councillors of the metros voted on this item (all decisions).”

“You are hereby advised to take the necessary steps to advise council to rescind this ill-advised decision as soon as practically possible and to timeously advise the National Treasury of the position of the metro within the next 14 days,” said Mgqaleni.

Step Up SA News recently discovered that the vehicles within the municipality are allocated to employees without proper driving documents. A reliable source stated that; “most employees are given cars to drive as they please.”

According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, on Saturday, 30 October 2021, Thenjiwe Booi drove straight into a tree outside Mangaung Traffic Department college.

Booi doesn’t hold any necessary driving documents according to a source and her alleged accident led to people getting hurt. She was given the car as an instruction so that she can “up her driving skills”.

“The unfortunate part now is that Mbalula (the designated driver) is being blamed by management for giving out the truck to someone who doesn’t have a license and Lefty Cobo (supervisor) who gave out the instruction is quite and not telling his fellow friends that this is what he usually does. Injury on duty procedures don’t apply here, so those with injuries will have to pay for their medical bills” an employee at the municipality said.

Over the past few years to date the municipality is known to never collect garbage in time, because of a shortage of trucks, Booi’s unfortunate accident will add one more truck to the list and again, it will be poor residents suffering.

With rubbish left uncollected a local radio station Motheo FM under Lebogang Matolong partnered with Bon Hotel to clean the city.

This initiative was supported by residents.

It’s not clear if the employees involved will be facing internal hearing and what the reasons given to the insurance are.

Mangaung Metro’s spokesperson Qhondile Khedama didn’t respond to questions.

This is a developing story.
